Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA) has urged free nutritious meal kitchens (MBG) to serve as emergency kitchens for communities still isolated by floods in Aceh Tamiang.

“We have coordinated with the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) to operate SPPGs as emergency kitchens,” Deputy Minister Veronica Tan said Monday, highlighting swift response for affected women and children.

Coordination is ongoing with other ministries and agencies to support isolated communities, with an emphasis on delivering food and essential aid to vulnerable groups.

“Inter-ministerial coordination is underway. Our hope is to provide help swiftly,” she added, stressing the need for rapid and organized relief efforts.

The government is also working to restore access to Aceh Tamiang. BNPB Head Suharyanto said aid can now reach some areas by road, though 216 villages remain affected.

Vital infrastructure in other regions remains disrupted, with three national road points still cut off, Suharyanto explained, including Meureudu–Pidie Jaya route and bridge, Teupin Manee Bridge in Bireuen, and Bireuen–Aceh Utara road.

“All critical points are being intensively repaired by the Public Works Ministry and joint task forces,” he said, as restoration of transport links is prioritized.

BNPB previously reported that floods and landslides across Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra had killed 914 people as of December 6: Aceh 359, North Sumatra 329, West Sumatra 226.

Search and rescue teams continue to track 389 missing individuals, though some previously reported missing have since been found or returned safely, highlighting the fluid nature of ongoing rescue operations.

The ministry emphasized that MBG kitchens can bridge gaps in aid delivery until access is fully restored, ensuring isolated communities receive nutrition and support in the aftermath of the disaster.
