Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government estimates that post-disaster recovery in North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Aceh will exceed Rp50 trillion (approximately US$2.99 billion).

Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) told reporters here on Tuesday that the figure is still provisional as conditions on the ground continue to evolve.

“I was in contact with the Minister of Public Works just yesterday. The initial calculation places the required budget at more than Rp50 trillion. This is an early estimate and cannot be considered final, as the situation is still developing,” he said.

AHY stated that he has instructed relevant ministries and agencies to continue updating budget needs to support the extended emergency response, as well as accelerated rehabilitation and reconstruction following the recent disasters.

“Nothing should be handled slowly, but we also cannot rush recklessly. Rebuilding is not only about speed, quality matters. We must ensure that restored structures are not left vulnerable to future disasters,” he emphasized.

According to AHY, disaster-related damage across the three provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra has affected 52 districts.

Damage includes between one thousand and two thousand public facilities, 199 health facilities, 534 educational facilities, 420 houses of worship, 234 office buildings, 435 bridges, 259 disrupted access routes, 163 severed access routes, 101 road segments cut off, and 62 collapsed bridges.

In addition, 156,500 homes were damaged, comprising 143,427 severely damaged, 2,298 moderately damaged, and 10,808 lightly damaged.

AHY also announced that he would travel to North Sumatra and Aceh, particularly Aceh Tamiang, one of the worst-hit areas, to ensure that field operations remain effective following the hydrometeorological disaster.

“This afternoon, I will return to North Sumatra and Aceh, especially Aceh Tamiang, which is among the most severely affected regions. I want to see the situation firsthand and ensure that the work on the ground is progressing in a tactical and effective manner,” he said.
