Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s men’s badminton squad swept Malaysia 3-0 to secure the team gold at the 2025 Thailand SEA Games, prompting praise from Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir for their dominant, confident performance.

Erick said the players showed composure and determination throughout Thursday’s final, leaving Malaysia little room to respond in a one-sided contest at Thammasat University Rangsit.

Indonesia opened strongly as Alwi Farhan defeated Leong Jun Hao 21-12, 21-19 to deliver the first point in the best-of-five matchup.

The first men’s doubles pair, Sabar Karyaman Gutama and Muhammad Reza Pahlevi Isfahani, extended the lead with a decisive 21-12, 21-12 win over Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik.

Moh Zaki Ubaidillah sealed Indonesia’s 3-0 victory by beating Justin Hoh 21-14, 21-12, securing the gold without needing the final two matches.

The win raised Indonesia’s gold tally to five and lifted the country to second place in the overall medal table at the 2025 Games.

Erick said the result reflected the athletes’ strong resolve to deliver their best on the regional stage and hoped the momentum would carry into the individual events.

“We hope the team gold will be repeated in the individual categories,” he said in a statement.

Indonesia’s women’s team took silver after falling 1-3 to host nation Thailand in a competitive final.

Putri Kusuma Wardani opened with a 21-8, 13-21, 21-16 win over Pornpawee Chochuwong, giving Indonesia an early lead before Thailand equalized.

In the second match, Rachel Allessya Rose and Febi Setianingrum lost 18-21, 21-11, 18-21 to Benyapa Aimsaard and Supissara Paewsampran, leveling the tie at 1-1.

Thailand then surged ahead as Ratchanok Intanon defeated Gregoria Mariska Tunjung 21-7, 21-15 in the third match.

The hosts closed out the final when Ornnicha Jongsathapornparn and Jhenicha Sudjaipraparat beat Ana and Trias 21-19, 21-18.

Erick also congratulated the women’s squad for their effort despite missing out on the gold.

Meanwhile, Indonesia temporarily sits second in the Thailand 2025 SEA Games standings after collecting five gold, nine silver and seven bronze medals on the event’s second day.

According to the official Games website monitored in Jakarta on Wednesday, host nation Thailand leads with 19 gold, 13 silver and 9 bronze medals. Indonesia’s five golds came from kayaking, taekwondo, pétanque, badminton and aquatics.
