The accident occurred when a replacement driver, identified by the initials AI, reportedly experienced brake failure while on an incline. AI believed he was pressing the brake pedal but instead accidentally stepped on the accelerator.
In an official statement in Jakarta, Vice President Gibran expressed his condolences and apologies over the incident and urged authorities to act swiftly.
“I have also requested a thorough investigation, law enforcement action, and a comprehensive evaluation to ensure that such incidents do not happen again,” Raka said.
“On behalf of the government, I extend my deepest apologies and regret this incident. It must not be repeated,” he added.
The accident left 21 people injured. Five victims, including one teacher and four students, were treated at Regional Hospital (RSUD) Koja, while the remaining 16 were admitted to RSUD Cilincing.
Raka also emphasized the importance of ensuring that all victims receive the best possible medical care.
“I urge that maximum medical treatment be provided for the victims, as well as counseling and trauma healing for the students and teachers of Kalibaru 01 school,” he emphasized.
The Metro Jaya Police have questioned the van driver and assistant involved in the crash.
Authorities plan to interview teachers and other witnesses while prioritizing the recovery of the victims.
The Criminal Investigation Directorate team has also conducted a crime scene investigation. Further examinations, including a urine test for the driver, are still ongoing.
