Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Trade Ministry ensured the re-construction of 112 traditional markets across Sumatra that were affected by the floods and landslides, including 65 markets in Aceh, 44 in North Sumatra, and three in West Sumatra.

“Recently, we identified the affected markets and coordinated with the Public Works Ministry. That’s 44 in North Sumatra, three in West Sumatra, and 65 in Aceh,” Trade Minister Budi Santoso said here on Friday.

He stated that his office has coordinated with the Public Works Ministry, which oversees market construction and renovation, to provide recommendations on which markets should be prioritized for repair.

“We will identify which markets are priorities for reconstruction and communicate with the Public Works Ministry, which usually seeks our recommendations,” he explained.

Currently, damage assessments are still ongoing, categorizing markets as lightly, moderately, or severely damaged. The government emphasized that repairs will focus on areas with the most severe damage to quickly restore community trade activities.

Previously, the government estimated a budget requirement of around Rp51 trillion or around US$3 billion for post-flood and landslide rehabilitation and reconstruction of basic infrastructure in the three flash flood-affected provinces in Sumatra.

Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono said the figure was an initial calculation by the Public Works Ministry and had been submitted to President Prabowo Subianto.

“The Public Works Ministry estimates the budget for rehabilitation and reconstruction across the three provinces at around Rp51 trillion, with the largest portion allocated to Aceh,” he said following a ministerial coordination meeting on post-Sumatra disaster recovery on Thursday (December 11).

The estimate covers repairs to road and bridge networks, water resource infrastructure such as dams, irrigation, embankments, raw water facilities, clean water and sanitation infrastructure, as well as strategic social facilities like schools, madrasahs, and places of worship.
