Jakarta (ANTARA) -
The Jakarta provincial government has begun distributing emergency assistance to traders affected by a fire at the Kramat Jati Main Market in East Jakarta, providing cash aid and temporary facilities as authorities move to stabilize trading activities.

The city has allocated Rp5 million ($320) in assistance to each of 121 traders impacted by the blaze, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said on Tuesday.

“We are providing aid to 121 traders, Rp5 million per trader, to help them meet their needs over the next five days,” Anung told reporters.

Beyond cash support, the provincial government is working to complete a temporary trading shelter within five days. The facility will be built near the burned kiosks so traders can continue selling while recovery efforts are underway.

For kiosks damaged or destroyed in the fire, Jakarta’s market operator Pasar Jaya will cover renovation costs through insurance. The Kramat Jati Market complex has around 350 kiosks, spread across 6,196 square metres, and is home to approximately 121 traders.

Despite the fire, Anung said the incident had not disrupted the supply of key commodities, particularly bananas and papayas, which are mainly traded at the market.

“Our stock is actually slightly abundant, so what happened on the ground does not cause any shortage in Jakarta,” the governor said.

Anung said initial findings pointed to an electrical short circuit as the cause of the blaze, and he urged Pasar Jaya to strengthen preventive measures at markets across the capital.

“Incidents like this are clearly linked to electrical faults. This is something Pasar Jaya must prevent in the future,” he said.

The governor added that Pasar Jaya plans to install additional fire hydrants at Kramat Jati Market to improve fire prevention and emergency response capacity.

Earlier, Pasar Jaya President Director Agus Himawan said 350 kiosks were destroyed in the fire, which broke out at around 7:15 a.m. in the market’s fruit block C2 area.

Firefighters from the East Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency deployed 95 personnel to battle the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to nearby sections of the market.
