Jakarta (ANTARA) - A fire broke out at the Kramat Jati Central Market in East Jakarta on Monday morning, destroying at least 350 kiosks at one of the capital’s largest food distribution hubs.

President Director of Perumda Pasar Jaya Agus Himawan said the blaze was first reported at around 7:15 a.m. (GMT+7). The fire swept through the Fruit Section in Block C2, causing panic among traders as hundreds of kiosks were engulfed.

Despite the scale of the incident, firefighters and the market’s internal security team acted quickly, preventing the flames from spreading to other sections of the market. The fire was brought under control within an hour.

"The fire was fully extinguished by 8:00 a.m., and cooling operations are still underway,” Himawan said.

Firefighters remained at the scene to ensure no hotspots remained that could trigger a secondary fire.

The East Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency (Gulkarmat) deployed 95 personnel to tackle the blaze. “We dispatched 19 fire engines and 95 personnel from East Jakarta,” said Abdul Wahid, the agency’s Head of Operations.

According to Wahid, the first report came in at 7:24 a.m. from residents who arrived in person to alert authorities. Fire crews reached the market just four minutes later.

Of the 19 fire engines deployed, 16 came from East Jakarta, supported by two units from the central agency and one from South Jakarta.

Joint teams focused on extinguishing the flames, securing the perimeter, and preventing the fire from spreading to nearby kiosks.

Cooling operations began at 8:20 a.m., with personnel inspecting rooftops, narrow gaps between structures, and other vulnerable areas. Firefighters also removed charred debris to speed up the cooling process.
