Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Archives (ANRI) is tracing the trail of the national capital’s relocation from Jakarta to Nusantara through archival records to present a full historical perspective on the journey of Indonesia’s centers of government.

ANRI Head Mego Pinandito, speaking after opening the 2025 National Collective Memory Festival (MKB) here on Thursday, said the archives document planning processes, policy dynamics, and the social and political contexts behind changes to the seat of government over time.

“Archives on the capital’s trajectory present a complete picture from Batavia and Jakarta to the planning and realization of the relocation to the Nusantara Capital City (IKN),” Pinandito said.

According to him, the archives on the capital relocation contain not only administrative decisions but also reflect urban governance challenges, population density, disaster risks, and the state’s long-term development vision.

ANRI has compiled and organized the archives into source manuscripts to make them easily accessible and understandable for the public, academics, and policymakers.

He added that archives serve as an important learning source to observe historical continuity while understanding the strategic reasons behind the relocation of the national capital.

Through this approach, ANRI seeks to strengthen the nation’s collective memory so the public does not view the capital relocation as an event detached from earlier history.

Beyond serving as a historical record, he said the archives on the capital relocation are also expected to become references for future urban development planning and public policy.

Through this initiative, ANRI reaffirmed its commitment to continuously explore, preserve, and utilize strategic national archives to strengthen national identity and Indonesia’s historical continuity for the present and future.
