"Without maintaining archives, the government system cannot continue," he said at the 53rd National Archives Day coordination meeting in Samarinda, East Kalimantan.
Gunarto said that archives have a vital role in ensuring that a nation's science and civilization, from the past to the future, are sustained.
This is becoming more relevant with the shifting of the national capital from Jakarta to Nusantara in East Kalimantan, he added.
"The process of archiving national knowledge and civilization must be maintained as a continuation of the government system," Gunarto said.
The coordination meeting also aimed to reward institutions and individuals who have demonstrated good performance in archiving, he added.
The reward was meant as an expression of appreciation for achievements made in one year and an important foundation for the development of archives in the National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN).
He stressed the need for continued efforts to raise awareness about archives among leaders, workers, and the public.
"The influence of materialism and globalization makes people forget about archives. This meeting is expected to remind archive activists to be more active," Gunarto added.
He said that he expects the archive national coordination meeting to realize synergy between the center and regions.
"This meeting is expected to form a national collective vision, mission, and memory," he said.
Moreover, the National Archive Day host changes every year, and this is expected to boost the spirit of archiving across Indonesia, he said.
Gunarto said that ANRI wants this spirit to sustain and strengthen the foundation of the national archives.
