Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta has begun developing 267 urban micro parks across neighborhoods to improve air quality, reduce extreme heat and raise living standards, as the capital accelerates efforts to position itself as a global city, officials said.

The micro parks, currently under construction at the sub-district level, form part of Governor Pramono Anung's priority agenda to address long-standing urban challenges such as flooding, traffic congestion and rising temperatures.

"Construction of 267 micro parks in urban villages, along with the revitalization of parks, lakes, ponds and reservoirs, is now under way," senior urban development adviser Nirwono Joga said on Wednesday.

The micro parks are designed to improve air circulation and natural lighting in densely populated areas, reduce health risks such as tuberculosis, provide disaster evacuation points and create safe public spaces for community interaction.

Jakarta is also prioritizing micro green open spaces in slum neighborhoods, where 455 slum community units have been identified across the capital, Joga said.

Additional greening initiatives include landscaping under 300 flyovers and bridges, restoring 32 kilometers of mangroves and planting 500,000 trees, with a target of expanding green open space to 10 percent of the city’s area by 2030.

To ease congestion, the city is expanding Transjabodetabek routes, increasing its electric bus fleet from 420 to 5,000 units and accelerating transit-oriented development projects.

Transjabodetabek is an expanded Transjakarta bus service linking Jakarta with Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi to reduce private vehicle use across Greater Jakarta.

Jakarta is also preparing sea-based Transjakarta routes to improve access to Seribu Islands and fast-tracking regulations on green and energy-efficient buildings for provincial government assets.

Vera Revina Sari, head of Jakarta's Public Works, Spatial Planning and Land Affairs Office, said the capital aims to achieve global-city status rooted in history, culture and innovation by June 22, 2027.

She called on urban planners, businesses and other stakeholders to strengthen collaboration in delivering sustainable and inclusive urban development.
