Cilegon, Banten (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation has implemented traffic management measures at Merak Ferry Port in Banten to address congestion during the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

The measures are designed to maintain the flow of vehicles traveling across the Sunda Strait to Bakauheni Port in Lampung, the primary maritime link between the islands of Java and Sumatra.

Director General of Land Transportation Aan Suhanan stated on Sunday that the ministry is optimizing "delaying systems," utilizing buffer zones, and conducting vehicle screening to manage the volume of travelers while prioritizing maritime safety.

The operation involves coordination between regional land and sea transport bodies, the National Police, and the state-owned ferry operator PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry.

Suhanan noted that intervention became necessary as high waves and strong winds in the Sunda Strait have disrupted ferry docking procedures, leading to significant vehicle queues.

Under the new protocols, the delaying system is activated whenever weather disturbances reach "Early Warning I or II" levels.

In addition to seasonal travelers, officials attributed the increased traffic to a high volume of logistics vehicles.

To mitigate the backlog, the government has deployed larger-capacity vessels across all docks since December 18.

PT ASDP has assured passengers that tickets will remain valid if they are affected by the delaying system.

The Directorate General of Land Transportation confirmed it will maintain close coordination with stakeholders to ensure safety throughout the holiday period.

Travelers have been advised to monitor meteorological forecasts to reduce the risk of accidents during the year-end transition.
