Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani on Wednesday extended Christmas greetings to Christians nationwide and urged Indonesians to mark the New Year with empathy and restraint, as a series of natural disasters continue to affect communities across the country.

Puan said she hoped Christmas celebrations in 2025 would proceed safely and peacefully in all regions, while also strengthening the spirit of brotherhood, solidarity and mutual care among Indonesians of different faiths and backgrounds.

She emphasized that religious celebrations should reinforce shared humanitarian values, especially during times of hardship.

“Let the spirit of Christmas remind us that hope always arises even in difficult circumstances,” Puan said in Jakarta, adding that moments of reflection and compassion are essential as many families cope with loss and disruption caused by floods, landslides and other disasters.

She expressed particular concern for Christians directly affected by disasters, saying they should still be able to observe Christmas, even if celebrations must be held in modest or limited ways.

Puan said she prayed that the meaning of Christmas would bring comfort, strength and peace to those who are grieving or struggling to rebuild their lives.

Turning to the upcoming New Year 2026, Puan encouraged the public to celebrate simply and responsibly, urging local governments to avoid excessive or lavish festivities.

She said restraint would show sensitivity toward disaster victims and reflect a collective commitment to empathy and social responsibility.

“Let us celebrate the New Year by building empathy for our brothers and sisters affected by natural disasters,” she said, stressing that joy should not come at the expense of awareness of others’ suffering.

Puan also called on Indonesians with sufficient means to actively support disaster victims, whether through donations, volunteer work or other forms of assistance.

She said the public’s willingness to help one another demonstrates national resilience and unity.

“The cooperation shown by Indonesians in helping disaster victims proves the strength of our brotherhood on this motherland,” she said.
