Jakarta (ANTARA) - Elementary and Secondary Education Minister Abdul Mu’ti said that 3,508 schools, or around 85 percent of the 4,149 schools affected by disasters in Aceh and Sumatra, have resumed operations.

The minister said here on Tuesday that some 54 school still host study sessions in tents due to heavy damages on their facilities. Moreover, several schools are completely destroyed, he added.

"Schools which are operational in Aceh are 2,226 or 81 percent, and then in West Sumatra are 380 or 86 percent, and in North Sumatra are 902 or 95 percent," Mu'ti elaborated.

He added that emergency learning tents have been set up at 14 locations in Aceh, 21 in West Sumatra, and 19 in North Sumatra.

Meanwhile, cleanup efforts are ongoing at 587 schools, comprising 516 schools in Aceh, 42 in West Sumatra, and 29 in North Sumatra.

“During this (cleanup) process, we are pursuing various efforts to ensure that children can continue learning. We aim to start learning activities by January 5, 2026,” he said.

He emphasized that students are not required to follow normal school routines during the emergency period. For example, students are not required to wear uniforms or shoes.

To facilitate learning under these conditions, his administration has formulated a special curriculum.

The ministry has also distributed school kits and erected tents for emergency classrooms to assist schools affected by the disaster.
