Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government has granted schools in disaster-hit areas flexibility to adjust learning activities to ensure education services continue after natural disasters.

Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu'ti said the policy aims to fulfill students’ right to safe, meaningful, and sustainable education following disasters.

"Education services must not stop due to disasters. However, the safety of students, teachers, and staff must remain the top priority in every policy," he said on Monday.

He said the ministry has issued a circular allowing schools to adjust teaching methods, class schedules, and the use of available educational facilities.

The ministry encourages schools to apply various learning alternatives, including limited in-person classes, remote learning, or other methods suited to local conditions.

The adjustments should consider the readiness of teachers and students and receive support from parents and local governments.

Mu'ti called on all education stakeholders to work together to restore education services in disaster-affected areas, while ensuring students continue to receive quality and equitable education.

The circular also stresses the importance of providing psychosocial support for students and teachers affected by the disasters.

The ministry urged schools to create child-friendly and empathetic learning environments to support the mental and emotional recovery of the school community.

Mu'ti also called on regional governments to coordinate with local disaster management agencies to ensure effective implementation of the policy.

Floods and landslides struck Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra in late November 2025, killing at least 1,100 people.

Mu'ti earlier said more than 4,000 schools in the three provinces were affected, with most expected to resume classes on January 5.
