Indonesia has pledged to maintain food self-sufficiency every year after officially achieving rice self-sufficiency in 2025, President Prabowo Subianto said on Wednesday, dismissing doubts that the milestone would be temporary.
Speaking at a national harvest event in Karawang, West Java, Prabowo said Indonesia had proven skeptics wrong and would continue to do so annually, expanding self-sufficiency beyond rice to include corn, cassava, and garlic.
"Each year we will prove it — self-sufficient," he said.
Government data show that Indonesia produced about 34.7 million metric tons of rice in 2025, exceeding domestic consumption of around 31 million tons and resulting in a surplus of more than 3 million tons, according to the National Food Agency.
Indonesia did not import rice in 2025, while national rice stocks at the start of 2026 reached about 12.5 million tons, including a record 3.25 million tons of government reserves.
President Prabowo also said the government plans to expand fisheries and livestock production to improve national nutrition and strengthen long-term food security.
Official figures show that the achievement has also boosted farmer welfare. Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman said rice self-sufficiency has directly improved farmers’ prosperity, with Indonesia’s Farmer’s Exchange Rate (NTP) reaching 125.35 in December 2025 — the highest level on record — reflecting stronger returns and higher farm incomes.
Prabowo marked the milestone with a symbolic rice-pounding ceremony alongside farmers and government ministers.
