Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government plans to implement a national single-price rice policy starting in 2026 to reduce price disparities between regions, Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan said.

The policy aims to keep rice prices consistent between Java and other regions, including Eastern Indonesia, with the government subsidizing distribution costs, he added.

"Eastern Indonesia should no longer bear higher rice prices. In 2026, we will strive to implement a single rice price nationwide," Hasan said after a limited coordination meeting on food security in Jakarta on Monday.

He said implementing the policy would require strengthening the role of state food logistics agency Bulog, particularly in maintaining national rice distribution and price stability.

During the meeting, the government also discussed granting Bulog an assignment margin to ensure sufficient funding for rice price stabilization and distribution tasks.

Hasan said the assignment margin calculation had been coordinated with the Ministry of Finance and the Development Finance Comptroller (BPKP) as part of efforts to strengthen Bulog's mandate.

The government also discussed national rice supply readiness, in line with the main harvest season, which is projected to begin earlier in February.

Hasan said current reference prices set premium rice at Rp14,900 per kilogram and medium rice at Rp13,500 per kilogram.

Through Bulog programs, he said eligible consumers could access rice priced at around Rp11,000 to Rp12,000 per kilogram.

Hasan said the single-price rice policy remains under development and requires support from multiple instruments, including distribution systems, financing schemes, and infrastructure readiness.

He added that strengthening Bulog's role and ensuring supply readiness are expected to gradually reduce regional rice price disparities.
