Ternate, North Maluku (ANTARA) - The Governor of North Maluku, Sherly Tjoanda, urged residents to remain alert when sailing, following information from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) regarding the ongoing extreme weather dynamics.

"We urge the public to stay vigilant, especially residents living in flood and landslide-prone areas. Continue monitoring weather information from BMKG and immediately report to local authorities if an emergency situation occurs," Tjoanda said when contacted here on Tuesday.

The governor urged all residents to enhance vigilance and preparedness in facing possible hydrometeorological disasters.

The appeal was based on an early warning of extreme weather issued by the Class I Sultan Babullah Ternate Meteorological Station, which forecast the potential for heavy rain accompanied by strong winds in several areas of North Maluku.

The conditions are expected to persist until January 25, 2026, with a high risk of flooding, landslides, and falling trees.

Governor Tjoanda emphasized that extreme weather with high rainfall intensity could cause serious impacts, particularly in low-lying areas and hilly regions prone to landslides.

Therefore, residents were asked to continuously monitor weather developments and not ignore warnings delivered by the authorities.

In addition to the public, the governor also instructed all regional government ranks, from provincial and district disaster mitigation agencies to sub-district heads and village heads, to enhance preparedness.

These measures include intensive area monitoring, readiness of personnel and equipment, and ensuring rapid response in the event of a disaster.

"Preparedness from all parties is crucial. Local governments at the grassroots level must actively monitor field conditions and be ready to take quick response measures to minimize risks," she emphasized.
