Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) is intensifying weather modification operations and accelerating the construction of temporary housing to reduce the risk of further disasters in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.

Head of the Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center of the BNPB, Abdul Muhari, said in Jakarta on Wednesday that the measures are part of efforts to control rainfall and speed up post-disaster recovery.

"The weather modification operations are intended to control the intensity of rainfall to prevent further disasters in disaster-prone areas," he said.

As of January 20, 2026, weather modification operations in Aceh have completed 507 sorties, utilizing a total of 484,600 kilograms of cloud-seeding material.

In North Sumatra, the operations have completed 390 sorties with 342,600 kilograms of material used, while in West Sumatra, 407 sorties have been completed with a total of 404,325 kilograms of seeding materials utilized.

In addition to weather modification, the BNPB, together with regional governments and other ministries and agencies are speeding up the construction of temporary housing, with the target of completing it before the start of the Islamic holy month Ramadan in February.

Of a total of 50,974 severely damaged houses, 27,946 have been proposed for temporary house construction.

So far, at least 1,286 temporary houses have been constructed and are ready to be handed over, while thousands more are still under construction.

Three provinces of Sumatra–Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra–were hit by heavy rainfall-triggered floods and landslides in late November 2025.

According to BNPB records, as of January 21, the disasters claimed 1,200 lives and left 143 others missing across the three provinces, with approximately 113,900 people displaced.
