A photo shared by Indonesia’s Cabinet Secretariat on Instagram shows a handwritten note outlining the president’s view on the strategic importance of the friendship between the two countries.
“I am committed to enhancing and strengthening the UK-Indonesia friendship and cooperation,” Prabowo wrote.
The head of state also expressed optimism that the enduring bilateral relationship would deliver tangible benefits to the peoples of both nations.
“I am convinced that this friendship and cooperation will be beneficial to both our countries and our peoples,” he added.
The statement was signed and dated January 20, 2026.
On the same day, President Prabowo was received by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street. During a one-on-one meeting, the two leaders agreed to establish a new strategic partnership between the governments of Indonesia and the United Kingdom.
“We consider the United Kingdom a partner with significant potential to contribute to our national economy, given its strong technological and financial capabilities. The country has also expressed interest in investing in Indonesia,” Prabowo told reporters after the meeting at Lancaster House.
The renewed partnership is built on four pillars, cooperation in economic growth; cooperation in climate; energy and nature; cooperation in defense and security; and cooperation in human resources and community development.
Both sides also signed a memorandum of understanding on the development of 1,500 fishing vessels to stimulate growth in the fisheries sector and strengthen Indonesia’s capacity to protect and utilize its marine resources.
In addition, Indonesia expressed its intention to expand education cooperation with the United Kingdom through the Russell Group, a consortium of 24 leading British universities, to broaden academic collaboration.
Accompanied by several ministers and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, President Prabowo also met with UK Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, as well as Indonesian and British business representatives, at Lancaster House.
On Wednesday, the head of state is set to hold a meeting with King Charles III in the British capital.
