Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government has urged provincial, city, and district governments currently in heavy rain alert and warning zones to activate disaster standby posts and emergency command systems for potential hydrometeorological disasters.

"The early warning document from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) must be a direct reference for regional leaders and all authorities in regions in activating preparedness systems," Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno said in Jakarta on Friday.

The BMKG has issued the Indonesian Weather Early Warning and a one-week outlook for the period of January 23–29, 2026.

According to official BMKG documents, several regions are under warning level (very heavy to extreme rain) and alert level (heavy to very heavy rain) for rainfall between January 23 and 25.

For January 23, the BMKG has set a warning level for Banten, Jakarta, and East Java.

Meanwhile, an alert level has been issued for West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

On January 24, regions under the alert category include Banten, West Java, East Java, NTB, NTT, Central Papua, Highland Papua, and Papua. For January 25, the alert level is set for Central Java, East Java, NTB, and NTT.

In addition to heavy rain, the BMKG has also issued strong wind warnings for several regions, including Aceh, Banten, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java, Bali, NTB, NTT, and several other provinces.

Minister Pratikno emphasized that the early warnings are the main foundation for the central government, regional governments, and the community in strengthening anticipatory measures.

"This is a crucial phase for early action to prevent fatalities and bigger losses," he remarked.

The government has urged regional governments to put the local Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), military and police personnel, volunteers, and other relevant agencies on full alert.

They were also urged to inspect river basins, embankments, landslide-prone slopes, and urban drainage systems while preparing evacuation routes and safe, ready-to-use shelters.

The minister emphasized that strengthening preparedness is part of a national risk-based disaster risk reduction strategy, using BMKG’s early warnings as the basis for cross-sector coordination.

“The central government will continue to monitor extreme weather developments throughout January 23–29 and ensure full support for regions until the extreme weather threat has passed,” he affirmed.
