West Bandung, West Java (ANTARA) - A search and rescue (SAR) operation is ongoing to rescue over 80 residents who went missing following a heavy rain-induced landslide on the slope of Mount Burangrang, West Bandung District, West Java, on Saturday morning.

West Java Provincial Secretary, Herman Suryatman, said that 113 residents were affected by the landslides. Joint personnel and search dogs were deployed for the operation, he added.

"From the 113 affected residents, 23 survived and have been cared for. Meanwhile, 8 people were found dead, and 82 others remain missing," Suryatman stated near the disaster site.

West Bandung District Head Jeje Ritchie Ismail personally coordinated the rescue operation, involving officers from the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), the National SAR Agency (Basarnas), and the police and military.

The government prioritizes care for the rescued victims, with some evacuated to refugee centers, he said, adding that rescue teams await favorable weather conditions to continue their operation.

Meanwhile, Cisarua Sub-district police chief, Adjunct Commissioner Yogaswara, said that the landslide occurred at 3 a.m. local time. Witnesses reported hearing loud noises before a wave of mud swept through the houses in Pasirlangu Village.

"Residents heard a strong rumbling noise, followed by the landslide that swept Pasirkuning to Pasir Kuda hamlets. A flash flood was reported to occur afterward," Yogaswara said.

The local police chief urged residents to remain vigilant and stay away from affected areas, as unstable ground may trigger another landslide.

"We exert our efforts in searching for the missing victims while ensuring the safety of rescue workers," Yogaswara said.

Scores of residents' homes were reportedly buried under the landslides and debris after the disaster.
