In a statement received in Jakarta on Saturday, BNPB Head Suharyanto emphasized that the agency will assist local governments in comprehensively addressing the disaster’s impacts, ensuring the basic needs of affected residents are met, restoring road access, and repairing infrastructure.
He made the remarks in response to the landslides that struck four villages in three sub-districts across Jepara on Friday (Jan. 9). The disaster has left roads leading to Tempur Village impassable due to debris and dirt.
"It is critical that we first focus on addressing the impacts on residents at this location (Tempur Village)," Suharyanto affirmed.
The official noted that the disaster damaged the homes of at least 13 families in the village and urged local authorities to facilitate their relocation. He then assured that BNPB is prepared and capable of constructing housing units for the displaced.
"I believe we do not need to insist on building many houses. We can start with one or two while ensuring that the victims’ needs are met," he stated.
He emphasized that BNPB has been working over the past 24 hours to raise and distribute essential items and equipment to all landslide-affected areas, assuring the public that the agency is well-prepared to deliver additional aid, including non-food relief.
"Basic needs go beyond food and drink; they also include clothing, bedding, medicines, blankets, and equipment to protect residents from illness and cold. We must provide all these necessities," he said.
The BNPB chief also commended local governments for mobilizing heavy machinery to restore road access. He reiterated the agency’s commitment to supporting residents in disaster response, including through the deployment of additional equipment and the allocation of funds for infrastructure repair.
