There must be no regional government where JKN membership declines.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment Muhaimin Iskandar said the government aims to continue expanding JKN membership coverage to reach 99 percent of the population by 2029.

The politician, widely known as Cak Imin, affirmed that the National Health Insurance (JKN) program represents the state’s tangible presence in fulfilling the mandate of the 1945 Constitution.

He said the JKN program ensures that people do not fall into poverty due to illness, while serving as the government’s effort to guarantee access to healthcare services for all citizens.

“Health plays a strategic role in maintaining national stability and sustainability. A healthy society will foster prosperity, well-being, and competitiveness,” Cak Imin said at the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Awards 2026 ceremony in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He therefore emphasized that sustaining participation in the program is a shared responsibility, particularly for regional governments.

“There must be no regional government where JKN membership declines. Beyond expanding coverage, local governments must also encourage improvements in the quality of healthcare services so that the benefits of the JKN program can be optimally felt by the public,” he said.

Cak Imin expressed hope that the 2026 UHC Awards would motivate regions that have yet to achieve universal health coverage. The goal, he said, is to ensure that all Indonesians are protected under the JKN program and to build a healthier nation.

A total of 31 provincial governments and 397 regency and city administrations received awards at the 2026 Universal Health Coverage Awards for their contributions to supporting public health protection policies through the JKN program.

“The role of regional leaders has a direct impact on this achievement, particularly in encouraging residents to register and in ensuring the continuity of active participation through local policy and budgetary support,” said BPJS Kesehatan President Director Ghufron Mukti.

As of Dec. 31, 2025, JKN membership had reached 282.7 million people, or more than 98 percent of Indonesia’s total population, with an active participation rate of 81.45 percent.

He said the achievement’s excellence has exceeded the national target set out in the 2025–2029 National Medium-Term Development Plan.
