Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Army continues the cleanup of schools and Islamic boarding schools in West Sumatra affected by the floods in the region in November last year.

Soldiers from the XX/Tuanku Imam Bonjol Military Command cleaned and revitalized several schools and Islamic boarding schools affected by the disaster on Thursday (January 29).

One of the personnel who carried out renovations at the Madrasah Tarbiyah Islamiyah (MTI) Paninggahan Islamic Boarding School in Solok District, West Sumatra, informed that his team is currently in the final stages of repairing buildings affected by the flooding.

"Several damaged parts of the Islamic boarding school are now ready to use. We are currently in the final stages of painting the fences and toilets," the personnel said in a statement on Friday.

The repairs included various physical tasks, including replacing damaged walls and doors, painting buildings, repairing electrical installations, and removing sand, soil, and rocks left over from the disaster.

In addition, the military personnel also cleaned the school yard and drains for a safer and more comfortable learning environment.

Besides cleaning and repairing the MTI Islamic Boarding School, they also focused on the cleanup of Maninjau 1 State Junior High School in Agam District, where the military personnel along with local residents cleaned up remaining post-disaster materials and repaired minor damage to several school facilities.

Similar activities were also carried out at several other locations, including Bancah 09 Elementary School in Jorong Bancah, Nagari Maninjau, Agam District; and the MTI Paninggahan Islamic Boarding School in Solok District.

The government hopes the repairs will allow children to resume schooling as normal, with the revitalization of educational facilities remaining a top priority.

Students and teachers from heavily damaged schools are holding classes in tents, while intensive cleaning and repair work continues. At the same time, the government is rolling out adaptive and flexible learning schemes.
