Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Republic of Indonesia, through its Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM), has become the first developing country to be included in the World Health Organization’s Listed Authority (WLA) for vaccine regulatory functions.

BPOM Head Taruna Ikrar stated in Jakarta on Sunday that the status was granted in December 2025, placing BPOM in a strategic position within the global vaccine ecosystem.

This achievement confirms the strength of Indonesia’s national vaccine regulatory system.

“Global recognition through BPOM’s designation as a WLA was not achieved overnight," Ikrar said. "Strengthening the regulatory system has been built through consistent policies, enhanced human resources, transparent governance, and a sustained commitment to continuous improvement.”

Ikrar emphasized that BPOM’s guiding principles —reaching high, staying grounded, and being deeply rooted—s erve as the foundation for balancing global standards with tangible public protection.

The WLA status signals global confidence that Indonesia’s regulatory system is robust, transparent, and on par with international standards.

However, Ikrar stressed that this recognition is only meaningful if it delivers a direct impact on public health, particularly in ensuring vaccine quality, safety, and availability.

“I need to emphasize that WLA is not the end point, but rather the starting point of greater responsibility,” he stated.

Asian Development Bank (ADB) Country Director Bobur Alimov expressed appreciation for the milestone, noting that the WLA status significantly strengthens Indonesia’s regulatory credibility globally.

Through this achievement, BPOM reaffirms its commitment to serving as a credible, adaptive, and influential authority at national, regional, and international levels.
