Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono held a phone call with United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Wednesday to discuss the latest developments in the Middle East following escalating tensions in the region.

Sugiono said the conversation focused on exchanging views regarding the evolving security situation, including recent attacks that have affected the territory of the United Arab Emirates.

“I spoke by phone with UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed to exchange views on the latest developments in the Middle East, including their assessment of attacks that have affected their territory,” Sugiono said in a statement posted on social media platform X on Thursday.

During the conversation, Sugiono also expressed Indonesia’s condolences over the loss of lives resulting from the recent escalation of violence in the region.

He emphasized Indonesia’s consistent position on respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries while upholding international law and the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter.

“I conveyed Indonesia’s sympathy for the victims and reaffirmed our position of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity while upholding international law and the principles of the UN Charter,” he said.

Sugiono added that Indonesia continues to support all diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions and preventing further escalation of the conflict.

He reiterated that dialogue and diplomatic engagement remain essential to maintaining peace and stability in the Middle East.

The latest tensions follow joint military strikes launched by the United States and Israel on Feb. 28 targeting locations in Iran, including areas near the capital Tehran.

The attacks reportedly caused damage to infrastructure and casualties, including injuries to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran later retaliated by launching drone and missile attacks targeting Israel as well as US assets in several Gulf countries.

The exchange of strikes has heightened concerns about a broader regional conflict and prompted calls from the international community for restraint.

In response to the escalating situation, Indonesia has urged all parties involved to immediately halt hostilities and prioritize diplomatic solutions.

Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry also said President Prabowo Subianto is willing to travel to Tehran to facilitate mediation efforts if requested and agreed upon by the parties involved.

The ministry said the offer reflects Indonesia’s commitment to contributing to global stability through its longstanding “free and active” foreign policy doctrine.
