Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Religious Affairs said that the distribution of ecoenzyme by the Indonesian Buddhist Youth Generation (Gemabudhi) at the pesticide-contaminated Jeletreng River, Banten, is a real example of ecotheology.

“This is a real practice of ecotheology. Hopefully, this movement will continue to grow, as the community is committed to producing more ecoenzyme,” the ministry's Director General of Buddhist Community Guidance, Supriyadi, said here on Sunday.

The Jeletreng River in South Tangerang, Banten, which flows to the Cisadane River, had been contaminated with pesticide residues following a fire at a storage warehouse in February.

The water from the fire-fighting efforts mixed with chemical residues and flowed into the river, causing pollution.

Supriyadi explained that Buddhist teachings emphasize the importance of caring for nature, as humans depend on the environment for their existence. There is a value that stresses the responsibility of humans to take care of nature, including forests and other natural resources.

“Buddhism also teaches us to care for the forest. There is a teaching that emphasizes the importance of caring for nature, as it is from the universe that we receive the source of life,” he added.

Furthermore, the concept of Paticcasamuppada, or interdependence, also teaches that all living beings rely on one another.

According to Supriyadi, this understanding of interconnectedness forms the moral foundation for Buddhists to protect the environment.

The action of releasing 10 thousand liters of ecoenzyme was recorded in the Indonesian World Record Museum (MURI) as the largest ecoenzyme distribution into a river.

This action was part of the 40th anniversary celebration of Gemabudhi and aimed at helping restore the environmental quality of the Cisadane River.

“Today, MURI witnessed the action of Indonesian Buddhist youth pouring ecoenzyme in celebration of Gemabudhi’s 40th anniversary,” MURI Operational Director Jusuf Ngadri said.
