Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto received Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Friday to enhance bilateral relations while celebrating the 2026 Eid alFitr.

The Presidential Secretariat said in a statement that Prime Minister Anwar arrived at the palace courtyard in a car escorted by 17 motorist troops at 4:25 p.m. local time. President Prabowo personally welcomed him as he disembarked.

Both leaders immersed themselves in the Indonesian traditional folk song from Maluku, “Rasa Sayange,” performed by the music corps during the diplomatic reception. Anwar was seen briefly singing along as he enjoyed the atmosphere.

The two figures then walked side by side into the palace interior while exchanging words in a cordial setting, the secretariat added.

At the palace, Prabowo and Anwar held a meeting aimed not only at furthering bilateral ties but also at displaying a genuine personal rapport between them as leaders of neighboring nations.

The Indonesian government expressed hope that the close bond would contribute to maintaining harmonious relations between Indonesia and Malaysia, enabling both countries to show mutual support in the face of regional and global challenges.

Prime Minister Anwar arrived in Jakarta on Friday afternoon, where Indonesia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono welcomed him upon landing.

In a statement, Anwar said he intended to use his Jakarta visit to engage President Prabowo in talks aimed at strengthening bilateral relations while exchanging perspectives on geopolitics, particularly amid the Middle East conflict.

At Prabowo’s invitation, the prime minister noted that the meeting was also expected to bridge Indonesia and Malaysia in discussing the war's implications for both people, as well as the regional and global economy and stability.

The Jakarta meeting followed their phone conversation on Monday (March 23), during which they addressed the war involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.
