House Speaker Puan Maharani said flexibility in civil service work should not compromise the speed of government services.
“Public trust is not built by changes in regulations, but by whether the public still feels the State is working at the same pace,” Puan said Thursday.
She emphasized that documents must be completed on time, administrative services remain responsive, and decisions delivered without delay.
The policy, she added, could modernize bureaucracy if it shifts focus from physical presence to measurable performance.
The government began implementing the Friday WFH policy for civil servants on April 1, 2026, with evaluations scheduled after two months.
Private sector employers have also been advised to adopt similar measures.
Several sectors are exempt, including healthcare, security, sanitation, and strategic industries such as energy, food, trade, transportation, logistics, and finance.
Puan stressed that oversight and clear evaluation indicators are essential to ensure civil servants remain productive.
“This policy cannot remain merely administrative. There must be regular evaluations to ensure effectiveness,” she said.
The initiative comes as Indonesia seeks to reduce workplace energy consumption amid global energy market volatility.
