“It is correct. The individual has been temporarily withdrawn to the central office for further examination,” Riau Islands regional immigration office head Ujo Sujoto said on Saturday.
An immigration officer identified by the initials JS has also been suspended for alleged involvement in the case.
Sujoto said the Directorate General’s internal compliance unit is continuing its investigation to uncover possible involvement of other officers.
He assured that the suspension would not disrupt services at the Batam Immigration Office, adding that an acting head will be appointed on April 6.
The case went viral after a group of Singaporean tourists reported being asked to pay money by immigration officers at the Batam Centre International Ferry Terminal on March 13–14.
