"We discussed efforts to support India in securing its urea supply needs, where Indonesia holds one of the sources," Sudaryono said on Thursday.
He addressed that Indonesia and India share close historical and cultural ties, as well as strong, mutually beneficial economic cooperation in various development sectors.
However, Sudaryono said the government prioritizes meeting domestic fertilizer needs before considering exports to maintain national food security and stable agricultural production.
He explained that India's planting season, which runs from July to September, coincides with a relatively low period of planting activity in Indonesia, thus providing room for supply management.
The Indonesian government expressed its readiness to export urea to India, but remains committed to balancing domestic demand with international market opportunities.
Technical details regarding volume, delivery times, and cooperation mechanisms will be further discussed between Indonesia's national fertilizer company and its fertilizer industry partners in India.
Sudaryono conveyed that the state-owned fertilizer company, PT Pupuk Indonesia, currently has a total production capacity of 14.65 million tons per year, consisting of 9.36 million tons of urea, 4.52 million tons of NPK, 750,000 tons of ZA, and 20,000 tons of ZK per year.
Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Sandeep Chakravorty welcomed the opportunity for cooperation and affirmed India's readiness to import fertilizer from Indonesia through a government-to-government scheme.
"If there is a surplus, we will be very happy to purchase it from Indonesia through a government-to-government cooperation scheme," he remarked.
