Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Youth and Sports is targeting certification for 300 disabled sports coaches through a master's training program and sports talent management program to strengthen an inclusive and sustainable sports ecosystem in Indonesia.

"This step aligns with President Prabowo Subianto's Asta Cita to strengthen human resources," Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir said via his official social media account, as quoted in Jakarta on Monday.

He explained that improvement in coaches capacity is a crucial part of building a more competitive foundation for disability sports.

The presence of certified coaches plays a significant role in producing high-achieving athletes and expanding access to equal sports coaching for people with disabilities in various regions, he added.

Thohir also noted that the Training of Trainers (ToT) program for disability sports talents was successfully held on April 21-23 in Surakarta, Central Java, involving 30 elite international athletes.

He said that this year's activity is focused on coaches and stakeholders in disability sports.

"The selected participants will be prepared to become agents of change in the development of disability sports within the community," he stated.

He further noted that the program’s implementation also reinforces the ministry’s commitment to ensuring equitable and accessible sports for everyone.

According to him, strengthening human resources through certified coaches is considered a crucial element in maintaining the sustainability of Indonesia's disability sports achievements, which in recent years have shown significant progress at the regional and international levels.

Indonesian disability sports, under the auspices of the Indonesian National Paralympic Committee (NPCI), recorded a major achievement by securing second place at the 2025 ASEAN Para Games in Thailand.

At the event, the Indonesian contingent won 135 gold, 144 silver, and 114 bronze medals across various sports, reaffirming Indonesia's position as a leading nation in Paralympic sports in the region.

Previously, Indonesia also made history by securing a hat-trick of winning the ASEAN Para Games in 2017 in Kuala Lumpur, 2022 in Surakarta, and 2023 in Cambodia.
