He said bonuses for medalists at the SEA Games, Asian Games and Olympics show the state’s appreciation for athletes’ sacrifices.
“Athletes give their all to win and elevate Indonesia’s name globally,” Erick said in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday.
He said the government consistently supports athletes’ lives, in line with the vision of President Prabowo Subianto.
“President Prabowo has said athletes are national assets whose sacrifices must be valued. The state supports them not only at ceremonies but throughout their lives,” he said.
Erick said the president has instructed that athlete welfare remain a priority to build a sustainable, high-performance sports ecosystem.
He said the government recognizes the sacrifices athletes make in preparing for and competing internationally.
He stressed that bonuses are not symbolic but reflect state support during and after athletes’ careers.
“These bonuses are concrete proof of respect and aim to secure better futures for athletes,” Erick said.
He urged athletes to use bonuses for long-term needs such as education, skills development, savings and investment.
This aims to prevent a decline in living standards after retirement.
Weightlifter Eko Yuli Irawan used his bonus to buy farmland for his parents and build a training facility.
Karateka Leica Al Humaira Lubis bought a home, while hockey player Revo Prilianto invested in gold and education.
Para-powerlifter Ni Nengah Widiasih used her Paralympic bonus to start a culinary business that created local jobs.
Erick said these examples show how athletes can use bonuses wisely to build sustainable futures and inspire others.
