Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Primary and Secondary Education Ministry has outlined a roadmap for Elementary School Teacher Competency Development Program for Teaching English (PKGSD-MBI) for the 2025-2029.

Director General of Teachers and Education Personnel at the ministry, Nunuk Suryani, stated here on Friday that the roadmap is intended to ensure that all 150 thousand elementary school will have teachers who are capable of teaching English for third-grade students within the next three years.

"Of the total around 150 thousand elementary schools in Indonesia, more than 90 thousand or around 60 percent, do not yet have teachers with an English language background," Suryani stated during the launch of the PKGSD Programme, which was broadcast online on the ministry's YouTube page.

Meanwhile, the government has been encouraging the strengthening of English learning in elementary schools in a more structured manner starting from the 2027/2028 academic year.

She added the implementation of English, as a compulsory subject in third grade, will be carried out gradually starting from the 2027/2028 academic year as stipulated in Ministerial Regulation Number 13 of 2025, targeting around 58 thousand schools deemed ready.

Therefore, she continued, in 2025, the ministry had collected data and verified 90,447 targeted elementary schools that will receive training interventions through the PKGSD-MBI programme.

In the same year, the ministry also prepared and trained 1,057 regional facilitators who will train and assist teachers, integrate the learning management system (LMS), and develop CFR A1 and A2 training modules.

This year, the ministry will organize English teaching training by targeting 10 thousand elementary school teachers as participants. Furthermore, in 2027 and 2028, the ministry is targeting the same training program to reach 30 thousand elementary school teachers.
