Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education is ready to train 5,777 primary school teachers to teach English, as part of the Primary School Teacher Competency Development Program for English Language Instruction (PKGSD-MBI).

The ministry's Director General of Teachers and Education Personnel, Nunuk Suryani, stated that the training marks the start of the PKGSD-MBI program series, which is set to run for the next three years.

"For this first phase, 5,777 teachers are participating. With a total target of 90,447 teachers, the training will be conducted in stages annually over the next three years," she said during the program launch, which was broadcast online via the ministry's YouTube channel on Friday.

She further noted that the 5,777 teachers, hailing from 177 districts and cities, are prepared to undergo English language teaching training using a blended learning method.

This approach combines online and offline sessions with mentorship from learning communities to ensure teachers receive direct, hands-on instruction.

For this year, the ministry is targeting to train 10,000 primary school teachers in total to support the plan of making English a compulsory subject for third graders starting from the 2027-2028 academic year.

Suryani affirmed that the ministry has coordinated with local education offices to ensure the teachers are deployed to teach English after concluding the training program.

She noted that 58,896 primary schools are targeted to set English as a compulsory subject starting from the 2027-2028 academic year.

Prior to the training intervention, the ministry noted that approximately 90,000 out of a total of 150,000 primary schools did not yet have teachers with the background or expertise required to teach English.
