Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto said the government will strengthen telecommunications in remote regions, including Miangas Island, by providing internet access, devices and infrastructure support to improve connectivity and public services.

“We will also provide school supplies and strengthen the network so mobile phones can operate here,” he said during a community dialogue at Talaud State Vocational High School 2 on Saturday.

The president called in Communication and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid, who accompanied him during the visit to Indonesia’s northernmost island.

He said the ministry will provide mobile phones and Starlink internet services to improve communication access in remote regions.

The program targets 203 families on Miangas Island for digital connectivity support.

To support the program, the government has prepared 180 Starlink modems and 210 mobile phones to ensure reliable communication and internet access for residents.

In addition, Prabowo donated a 15 gross tonnage fishing boat to support the local economy and announced plans to develop a Fishermen’s Village.

“Construction will begin next month. Be prepared, I will check later,” he said.

The village will include ice-making machines, cold storage facilities and a dedicated fuel station for fishermen.

In education, Prabowo reaffirmed plans to renovate schools nationwide over the next two to three years, including in remote border areas.

He also ensured Talaud State Vocational High School 2 had received digital tools, including interactive boards, to support teaching and learning.

Prabowo arrived in Miangas after attending the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu, Philippines, on May 7-8, 2026.

Miangas Island is among Indonesia’s outermost territories, located at the northern tip of the country near the Philippine border.
