Bengkulu (ANTARA News) - Bengkulu province at 10.19 pm was struck by a 5.9-magnitude earthquake, but not strong enough to trigger a tsunami.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said the quake was located 4.68 degrees southern latitude and 101.16 degrees eastern longitude.

The quake`s epicenter was located 157 km southwest of Bengkulu in a depth of 13 Km.

The quake struck when people were sound asleep, but the people remained alert after the quake stopped, a Bengkulu resident Syamsudin said.

Previously Bengkulu was struck by a 7.3-magnitude quake in 2000, and in 2007 by a 7.9-manitude tremor, destroying thousands of houses and killing hundreds of people, and causing hundreds of billions of rupiah in losses.(*)
