Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The government is making serious efforts to strengthen the country`s legal system, and doing it by improving the efficacy of the Judicial Mafia Eradication Task Force, the Corruption Eradication Commission, National Police Commission and the Prosecutors` Oversight Commission, a spokesman said.

"The government is making serious efforts to strengthen the existing legal institutions because the people have become increasingly able to assess their performance," Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto said after officiating at a function to mark the 4th anniversary of the Marine Security Coordination Board (Bakorkamla) here on Wednesday.

He said a presidential regulation to amend legal provisions on the powers of the National Police Commission and the Prosecutors Oversight Commission was now being finalized.

"The presidential regulation will allow the two commissions to supervise the performance of the police and the public prosecutor`s offices more intensively," Djoko said.

The presidential decree would not directly touch the main functions and powers of the police and public prosecutor`s offices.

"These changes in the authority of the two commissions are examples of the government`s serious efforts to improve and strengthen the existing legal institutions," Djoko said.

He said the formulation of the presidential regulation on the two commissions had reached its final stage and the final draft would be handed to the vice president before it was approved by the president.

"The final draft of the presidential regulation is almost completed and will soon be handed to the president and vice president, perhaps later this week," Djoko said.

He said after the new presidential regulation had come into force, the roles of the National Police Commission and the Prosecutors Oversight Commission in providing inputs to improve the National Police and judicial agencies would be more significant.

Concerning the legal defense plea submitted by tax evasion suspect Gayus Tambunan, Djoko said it was a positive thing.

"That is a good input from Gayus as a community member and the actor of legal mafia, and therefore we are going to evaluate every input in relation with the judicial mafia, including the action against legal apparatus involved in the case," Djoko said.
