"It was for deepening the relations so that in case someday our fugitive escapes there coordination will be made easier," Sutarman said after the meeting.
He said (if the relations were good) it would be easier for the Indonesian police to coordinate with the New Zealand's police in case a fugitive escapes to that country.
He referred to the case of Imran Firasat Sulaeman who fled to Spain after killing and mutilating Viktor Rizki Wibowo. He said Imran was caught in Cordova after being on the run for several months.
Sutarman then gave an opportunity to Commissioner Howard to visit the Jakarta police's Traffic Management Center which is used to monitor and manage traffic in the capital city.
Howard said Indonesia had a huge population and therefore was facing traffic problems unlike New Zealand whose main problem is alcohol consumption.
He however said that both Indonesia and New Zealand had a common concern about human trafficking.
Therefore, the two countries' police forces planned to sign a memorandum of understanding.
Indonesian National Police Chief General Timur Pradopo was scheduled to sign the MoU with Howard at the National Police Headquarters here on Friday.
