Mataram (ANTARA News) - A whirlwind struck Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara Province on Sunday around 0.30 a.m. local time.

The wind caused some houses to lose their rooftops and toppled a number of trees.

According to the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) of Selaparang Mataram, the wind blew with a velocity of 40 km per hour and the tide rose to two to three meters high.

Local fishermen were advised to stay away from the rough and bad weather.
The strong and annual wind was dubbed `Tembaru Cina` (Chinese new year) by local residents and it usually lasted for one week, a resident of Mataram, H Muhammad said.

According to him, residents panicked because of the whirlwind but luckily it didn`t destroyed their houses.

In November 2010, a whirlwind also hit Dasan Kolo Hamlet, Ampenan Village, Mataram damaging around 120 houses.

Amil Zakat Board (BAZ) of Mataram provided 300 million rupiah in relief assistance for repairing the damaged houses in cooperation with Mataram Mayor H. Mohan Roliskana.

Around 90 percent of the damaged houses in Dasan Kolo Hamlet have been repaired under the program.
