Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) will always focus on safeguarding the country`s outlying islands and border areas, a spokesman said.

"Safeguarding outlying islands and border areas will be one of the main topics to be discussed at the meeting of the TNI AL leadership in 2011," TNI AL spokesman Commodore Tri Prasodjo said here on Sunday.

Tri said the Navy had so far been intensifying security around the country`s 92 outlying islands particularly 12 outlying islands bordering other countries.

The outlying islands in question are Rondo bordering India, Berhala bordering Malaysia, Nipa bordering Singapore, Sekatung bordering Vietnam, Marore, Marampit and Miangas bordering the Philippines, Fanildo, Bras and Fani bordering Palau, Batek bordering Timor Leste, and Rote bordering Australia.

The efforts to safeguard the outlying islands were made by conducting patrols involving warships and airplanes, and hydrographic surveys to determine the country`s sea borders, he said.

"Apart from that, we also have conducted a civic mission called Surya Bhaskara Jaya as a manifestation of TNI Al`s care and role in promoting remote areas and deployed marine troops on the uninhabited outlying islands," he said.

He said the meeting would also discuss the development of the Navy`s strength in pursuit of minimum main strength under the concept of three dimensions in an integrated manner.(*)
