Bondowoso (ANTARA News) - A team of scientists of the Institute for Conservation of Archaeological Heritage (BP3) in Trowulan, Mojokerto district, has been examining and investigating a statue found in Pekauman village, Grujugan sub-district, Bondowoso district, East Java, on Wednesday.

"Two of the Trowulan BP3 research teams had visited the discovery site," Head of Bondowoso District`s Cultural, Tourism, Youth, Sports and Transportation head Joko Suwarnos said here Wednesday.

Previously, a number of residents in the Pekauman village, Grujugan sub-district discovered a statue with 207-cm long and 60-cm wide on Tuesday (22 / 2) and estimated that it might have come from the Megalithic era.

Joko said that the arrival of the BP3 team in Trowulan is a follow-up of a letter sent by the Bondowoso municipal on sculpture discovery.

The team of scientist had also initially confirmed that the sculpture originated from the Early Megalithic period with primitive classification after they observed it.

"We will receive an official letter from the BP3 Trowulan on the results of research for statue in Pekauman Village," he said.

Joko also said that the Tourism Office will ask to guard the site and monitor closely the Megalithic statue and prevent the archaeological object from being stolen.

"The historical statue has a high value and many parties might want to steal and sell it for their own benefit," Joko said.
