Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Democratic Party politician Roy Suryo said he was shocked to learn from a number of online media that the ANTARA building on Jalan Merdeka Selatan 17, Central Jakarta, caught fire Monday, at 4.35 pm.

The same feeling was also expressed by Golkar Party politician Theo L Sambuaga, former House Commission I chairman, and thanked God nobody was hurt in the fire.

Smoke spread to practically all directions of the 20-floor building caused ANTARA journalists on the 20th flood as well as others some other floors panicked.

Many journalists saved themselves using emergency room, while other remained with their tasks of covering the accident including tacking photos.

The employees of many institutions in the building had to be evacuated, and there were no reports on fatalities.

The Jakarta fire department had sent 14 fire engines and the flames could be put out at about 6.30 pm.

"We wish to express our deep sympathy over the fire of ANTARA building," Roy Suryo said through his cell phone after the small plane which he and his entourage used, landed from the border town of Sendawar, Kutai Barat, East Kalimantan.

In the meantime the police is conducting a thorough investigation of the mishap, which may last until tomorrow.

The police still has no idea on what had really caused the fire, but several sources suspected that the main source was melting plastic pipes, especially on the fifth, eleventh and twelfth floors, and some said also the 16th and 17th floors.
