Surabaya, East Java (ANTARA News) - A US warship, the USS Germantown, called at Surabaya`s port of Tanjung Perak on Thursday for a four-day visit to enhance relations between the two countries` navies.

"We will be in Surabaya for four days. Besides building cooperation with the Indonesian navy, the visit will also be aimed at increasing the two countries` relations," US Naval Attache Adrian Jansen said to reporters at Tanjung Perak port.

Commanding Officer CDR Michael A Crary, USN, said the visit was part of the relations that kept improving between the US and Indonesia under the Comprehensive Partnership program.

"We are natural partners and friends and we hope the ties and communications between the US and Indonesian navies would continue to be strong and for that we came here to see directly this big country," he said.

He lets school students who wish to take a closer look at the ship to come.

USS Germantown is the first of its kind that is assigned in the Pacific.

The name is taken from a historic Germantown area in Pennsylvania known as the site of an important battle during the American revolution.

The ship has sophisticated capabilities and is capable of carrying out various tasks. The amphibious ship`s mission is carrying and launching amphibious vehicles and ships.

The ship could also swiftly and effectively save civilians who are cornered or suffering from pressures in a dangerous area and carry tons of aid supplies to victims several hours after its arrival in the area.

The ship has also been completed with sophisticated medical and dental treatment equipment to make it also able to be to function not only a warship but also a peace-making ship.(*)
