At the meeting Indonesia would propose its membership of the organization`s strategic positions be extended, Head of the Information Center of the Culture and Tourism Ministry I Gusti Ngurah Putra said in a press statement here on Friday.
Head of the Foreign Cooperation Bureau of the Culture and Tourism Ministry N.W. Giri Adnyani said earlier Indonesia was currently a member of the organization`s Executive Council, Programme Committee, and World Committee on Tourism Ethics.
"Indonesia has applied for the extension of its membership of the UNWTO`s strategic positions, namely Executive Council, Programme Committee, and World Committee on Tourism Ethics for the 2011-2013 term," Giri said.
Indonesia`s application would be discussed at the 19th session of the UNWTO General Assembly in South Korea, Giri said.
Giri expressed hope that Indonesia would be reelected as member of the executive council for the 2011-2015 period at the session.
"We will also propose that Director General of Marketing of the Culture and Tourism Ministry DR. Sapta Nirwandar be re-elected as a member of the Programme Committee on Tourism Ethics for the 2011-2013 term," Giri said.
Only recently, UNWTO held a conference on mainstreaming tourism in the media in Sri Lanka. One of the issues discussed at the conference was the role of the media.
The media played a role in encouraging the development of the tourism sector. The global tourism industry recovered from the 2010 global financial crisis due in part to positive news reporting, the conference noted.
In addition, the media also played a bigger role in promoting regional tourism. Tourists decided their tourist destinations based on what they learned in the media, the conference said.
