Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The governments of Indonesia and Turkey have agreed to step up political and security cooperation between the two countries.

The cooperation will also include the support of the candidacy of the two countries in the international organization forum as an active contribution in regional and global problem solving.

Such a cooperation was one of the points of agreement which was reached by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and his Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gul in a bilateral meeting at Merdeka Palace here on Tuesday.

In the present global problem, Indonesia and Turkey find it important to engage in security and political cooperation in various international forums.

"The issues we discussed were related to effort to step up bilateral cooperation. We also discussed various global issues in our effort to enhance togetherness in G-20 and D-8," President Yudhoyono said in a joint press conference with Gul after the end of their bilateral meeting.

He said that to step up mutual understanding, the two countries would encourage political consultation to study and discuss all aspects of bilateral relations and cooperation.

The two countries cooperation will also cover the prevention, detection, and eradication of transnational crime of goods and human smuggling through the Bali Process framework.

Effort to combat terrorism and to intensify information exchange on terrorism was also discussed at the bilateral meeting between President Yudhoyono and his Turkish counterpart.

In addition, Indonesia and Turkey also agreed to cooperate in strengthening the ability to run disaster response process, management and mitigation.

The Turkish president is in Indonesia from April 4-6 to reciprocate the visit to Turkey by President Yudhoyono in June last year.

After the bilateral meeting at Merdeka Palace, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on consular, diplomatic, and cooperation in disaster management was sighed before the two presidents.
