Ambon, Maluku (ANTARA News) - The Ambon city administration will be focusing on developing coastal fisheries after the city had been established as a Minapolitan fishing area by the Marine Affairs and Fishery Ministry, Ambon Mayor Jopie Papilaja said here Tuesday.

"We will focus on developing coastal fisheries on the basis of the current condition of Ambon city which consisted of 52 percent as coastal areas," said Papilaja.

Papilaja said that the establishment of Ambon city as a Minapolitan area is a follow up of the Ambon Mayor`s Decree on the establishment of minapolitan working groups.

"After the working groups had been established, we have defined the core area, namely Nusantara Fishery Port in Tantui, Sirimau sub-district," he said.

The coastal fisheries development will be based the industries of each family of the corporation of the industrial enterprises in Ambon city, the mayor said.

Papilaja also said that development strategy is conducted by conserving marine and fisheries resources in coastal areas under the control of the municipal administration.

Another thing to consider is the development of an integrated coastal management to accommodate interests such as the coastal areas spatial planning.

"The Spatial Planning is currently discussed in Ambon city`s parliament to set Regional Regulations)," Papilaja said.

He added that another strategy would be to expand VAT quality and quantity by increasing of the Nusantara Fishery Port, Fish Landing Base and markets, also enhancing the the quality of public services.

"The expansion plan will be submitted to the Marine Affairs and Fishery Ministry to establish Ambon city as Minapolitan area," he said.
