Bogor, West Java (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has called for synergy between the military (TNI) and the police in preventing threats to security and order.

Defense forces (TNI) commander Admiral Agus Suhartono said here on Tuesday the president made the order at a meeting at the presidential palace here that day which was attended by TNI/police leaders as well as regional heads from accros the country.

He said recent violences and attacks should serve as an alert warning for TNI and police to cooperate to increase security.

"So, the recent incidents should be considered as an alert for us to develop synergy to increase performance and for TNI and police to be able to deal with security problems better," he said.

In his directives, he said, the president had emphasized that asking for help does not mean incapability. That is the important thing to understand, the President said.

Agus said the President stressed that combining the capability of the TNI and the police would increase strength and ability of the state apparatus to be more effective when dealing with problems.

"For example, if the police are still unable to deal with a problem and then ask for help it doesn`t mean that the police have no capacity. It is all about how to make the state`s resources effective for handling problems," Agus said.

National police chief General Timur Pradopo meanwhile said that the President in his directives had also emphasized the importance of public participation in maintaining security in their neighbourhoods.

"In dealing with security I think everyone must be involved," he said.

He said the police must be able to provide deterrance for the community to be able to secure its neighbourhood while the community must be able to become part of prevention against security disruptions.(*)
