"The president has welcomed Komnas HAM`s inputs, and in short the president has a strong commitment to solving the human right violation cases that happened in the past," Chairman of Komnas HAM Ifdhal Kasim said after a meeting with the head of state at the presidential office here Friday.
According to Ifdhal, they did not discuss specific cases in the meeting.
He said that the president has also assigned Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto to hold a meeting with Komnas HAM.
"There will be a follow-up discussion this month, and the coordinating minister for political, legal and security affairs has been assigned to hold a meeting with Komnas HAM to discuss the past cases including the May 98 (case)," he said.
The president has also accepted a proposal by Komnas HAM to organize routine meetings with coordinating ministers.
The routine meetings will discuss follow up of recommendations submitted by Komnas HAM.
""The president has assigned the coordinating minister for political, legal and security affairs to hold regular meetings every three months with Komnas HAM, while with the president is every six months," he said.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono received the leaders of the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) at his office here Friday.
Recommendations submitted by Komnas HAM, have been helpful for the government in protecting the people`s human rights, according the the president.
"I have monitored and received reports from ministers and special staff in the legal and human rights field on what Komnas HAM have done and recommended throughout Indonesia to promote and protect the human rights of our fellow citizens," he said.
He admitted that there were still problems concerning the implementation of human rights in this country, but at the same time there have been substantial progresses in the human rights field, compared to several years ago. (*)
