Jakarta (ANTARA News) - State-owned Bank Mandiri has signed a cooperation agreement with the National Defense Forces (TNI) for the speedy and effective delivery of relief aid to victims of natural disasters.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) formalizing the agreement was signed by Bank Mandiri president director Zulkifli Zaini and TNI chief Admiral Agus Suhartono at the Sudirman building in the compound of the TNI Headquarters here on Monday.

Zulkifli Zaini said the TNI was an important element in disaster handling because TNI had the equipment and a well structured operational apparatus covering human resources, health care, including transportation.

"We know that Indonesia is located in a disaster-prone area and the TNI is one of the elements in our formal capacity to handle disasters. We hope through this cooperation, relief assistance channeled to the affected areas can be more effective and targeted," Zulkifli said.

For the first stage, Bank Mandiri, the largest national bank in term of assets, will channel the assistance for the earthquake victims in Mentawai Islands in West Sumatra and to Wasior worth rp2.04 billion.

The fund was donated by people into the self-care account for Mentawai and Wasior disaster victims which was opened after the calamity.

Of the fund donated, some rp1.13 billion was allocated for the

post-earthquake handling in Mentawai, which is divided that some rp750 million to be used for the construction of educational facilities and Rp379.17 for religious facilities.

In addition, the fund allocated for the flash flood impact handling in Wasior, Papua reached rp913.05 million, consisting of rp600 million to finance school construction and the rest rp313.047 for religious facilities, Zulkifli added.(*)
